(7 dic. 1885, Providence, R.I., EE.UU.–8 feb. 1957, Boston, Mass.).

Jurisconsulto estadounidense. Se graduó en la escuela de derecho de Harvard y se integró a su cuerpo académico en 1916. Preocupado de las restricciones a la libertad de expresión impuestas en la primera guerra mundial, escribió Freedom of Speech [Libertad de expresión] en 1920, que se convirtió en uno de los más influyentes textos del pensamiento libertario estadounidense. Chafee fue reconocido como un experto en materia de libertades civiles, e influyó en Louis Brandeis y Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. También fue una autoridad en equity, documentos negociables y en ley antimonopolios.
